Abu gear ratio upgrade.

Pick up the pace by upgrading your reel from a 5.3:1 gear ratio to 6.3:1 retrieve.  If you have a need for speed and like to cover allot of water while throwing artificial baits, a higher retrieve may be what you need.  By replacing your existing pinion and drive gear with genuine hi-speed precision cut gears, you'll see a noticeable difference.

Replacement gears only $34.50

Replacement gears installed with reel service or repair $30.50

Strengthen Your Shimano spinning reel.  Some model reels have plastic (duralon) drive gear bushings which can wear out the main drive gear shaft, in turn wearing out the oscillating gear.  This is usually noticed by excess noise, wobble in the handle, binding or gear slippage.  The solution is to replace the original drive gear bushing with a bearing then shim it to the proper fit.  This results in a longer lasting and a much stronger reel that can handle the pressure of an active fisherman.  Some models which have this duralon bushing are CX, FX, IX, Sahara, Sedona, Slade, Sonora, Spheros, Stradic, Sustain, Symetre.  Not all sizes within a reel family need the upgrade.  Consult your reel schematic or email me to find out if you can benefit from this upgrade.  The cost to upgrade is very inexpensive and well worth the money.

The picture below is from a Sedona model SE-4000FB. You can clearly see the wear caused by the plastic bushing on the gear shaft.  This particular reel required both the main drive gear and oscillating gear to be replaced.  Cost for repair and upgrade, $12.00

Johnny Morris Signature spinning reel sold at Bass Pro Shops.  I recently received one of these reels for service, which impressed me, and thought I'd make mention of it.  The specs are about the same as any other spinning reel of equal capacity but what grabbed me is the fact that it’s all but waterproof.  By design water is the biggest enemy of spinning reels unless you want to pay $600 for a water proof reel.  For $100 this reel is definitely worth a look if you’re thinking about a new spinning reel.

Under the rotor, which houses the anti-reverse and two pinion gear bearings (most reels have one), is a cover which seals the bearings.  The cover has one gasket to seal the rotor and another which seals the whole assembly to the frame.  Both main drive gear bearings and butt cap are also sealed.  Along with being gasketed the butt cap is secured from the inside which may not mean much but is one less exterior opening for potential water intrusion.  The clicker on most spinning reels is located under the rotor and susceptible to corrosion, on this reel it’s located inside the spool and under the drag washers, which are also gasketed.

The main drive gear is very similar to Penn gears, which are quite strong, and the oscillator assembly is like that used by Shimano with fewer moving parts.

The reel I serviced is about two years old.  Since I haven’t seen the latest model I can’t say what it looks like (inside) but I’d hope the folks at Bass Pro have maintained the same standard and not chopped it up to save cost.
